The
Tread Climber from Nautilus (Bowflex) is a very interesting and unique
cardio machine. The best way to describe it is combination treadmill
and stepping machine, with two separate treads - one for each foot -
that move up and down as you "climb" through your workout.
It provides a very efficient low-impact workout that is great for people
with leg or back problems. However, some of the reviews available online
show that people tire of the rather strange movement after awhile. Also,
it seems that many Tread Climbers begin to have mechanical problems
after about 6 months of steady use. However, Nautilus appears to be
fixing the problem with the newer machines...
From the Tread Climber web site:
Reduce your exercise time with a super-efficient, low-impact workout!
The Tread Climber TC5000 has twelve (12) intensity settings make it
easy to tailor your workout specifically to your fitness and comfort
level - from beginner to elite athlete - with speeds that adjust from
0.7 to 4.0 mph. Fully integrated electronics, including a wireless
heart rate monitor, enable you to monitor every vital aspect of your
workout - and achieve maximum results.
Eight (8) state-of-the-art electronic functions monitor every aspect
of your Tread Climber workout, including Speed, Time, Distance, Calories
Burned, Calories-Per-Minute and Total Steps. A Climb Indicator displays
every 100-feet of elevation gain. Calorie-burn calculations are based
on body weight and intensity inputs - in addition to distance and
speed - for greater accuracy. The Tread Climber also includes a powerful
commercial-grade motor for years of trouble-free use. Large footboards
alongside tread-belts make starting or stopping exercise safe &
easy and six (6) bright, easy-to-see LED readouts allow operation
in any lighting.

Studies Prove Tread Climber Burns 157% More Calories Than
Treadmills
In clinical tests at New York's Adelphi University, the school's
Human Performance Laboratory found conclusive results that it takes
more than twice as long to burn the same amount of calories on a treadmill
than on a Tread Climber - at comparable speeds and intensity levels.
The Adelphi study found that you'd have to work out for over an hour
on a treadmill (1 hour and 17 minutes to be exact) - at the same pace
- to get the same calorie burn as you'd get in just 30 minutes on
a Tread Climber.
In fact, no other exercise burns calories as fast or efficiently
as using Tread Climber just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week! The Adelphi
performance results were so incredible, Nautilus asked Dr. Neil Wolkodoff,
a well-known trainer of professional athletes, to conduct his own
study.
In a separate series of tests, Dr. Wolkodoff verified Tread Climber's
calorie-burning effectiveness, and he also made several new discoveries:
- Tread Climber can help "teach" your body to burn more
calories
- After 4 short weeks, volunteers in Dr. Wolkodoff's study actually
increased their number of calories burned during a 30-minute workout
by 17%
- Tread Climber is better at burning fat calories than harder exercises
- Using Tread Climber just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, volunteers
reduced their body fat by as much as 15 lbs. in 30 days - that's
more than some had lost after months of running!
