Low Carb, Low Nutrition?

Learn why many "low carb" diet plans are missing vital nutrients important for your health...

  fitFAQ Fitness Guide

One of the biggest problems with many "low carb" weight loss plans - especially the Atkins Diet - is that they can be very "nutrient-poor", especially in terms of plant-based antioxidants/enzymes, fiber, and healthy omega fatty acids. Too many people on these diets think they can just eat steak, hamburger, bacon, chicken wings, etc....avoid all so-called 'bad carbs'....and be lean and healthy.

These people - who may number in the millions now - are setting themselves up for serious health problems in the future (including heart disease, liver disease, and cancer to name just a few).

High-protein, low-carb diets work (in the short-term at least) mainly because they keep your insulin levels in check. When your insulin levels are kept low long enough and your carb-stores (including muscle/liver glycogen) are depleted, you lose weight.

Although controlling blood sugar and insulin levels is definitely a good thing to do, it's debatable whether or not low-carb is really the best way to lose weight. But one thing's for sure: to achieve optimum health and fitness - and to protect yourself from disease - you MUST include lots of vegetables (especially the green, leafy variety) and healthy fats (mainly from fish and flax seeds) in your diet.

You should also be sure to take a very high-quality multinutrient. (Total Balance from Xtend-Life is one of the best)

No matter what, remember that achieving weight loss is great only if it improves your health - not hurts it! Including healthy whole grains and fruits in your diet is fine, no matter what the low-carb "experts" want to say. Millions of healthy and fit people with great bodies do so every day...and these people will continue to be healthy and fit for the rest of their lives.
