How to Lose 3 Pounds Real Fast

We get lots of questions about the best way to lose 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 50 pounds -- sometimes as many as 100 pounds -- in the fastest way possible. The questions are usually from someone who knows little or nothing about healthy weight loss but has some kind of big event, such as a wedding or party, coming up in the next few weeks.

Unfortunately the truth is that there's no simple answer to these types of questions. Everyone is different, with different circumstances, different metabolisms, different emotions, and different likes and dislikes regarding diet and exercise.

Losing that kind of weight in a healthy way -- and keeping it off over time -- takes a huge amount of dedication and self-discipline. Most people simply aren't prepared physically, mentally, or emotionally. They end up biting off more than they can chew.

95% of people who start off with some huge, unrealistic weight loss goal are going to be very disappointed. They're gonna hit the "brick wall" very quickly in terms of both energy and motivation. No matter how much you think you want it, you're simply not going to lose 20 pounds of fat and get "six pack" abs in the next 3 weeks. Sorry... but it's the truth!

What I like to tell people is this: how about starting off with 3 pounds? Just three measly pounds. This is a very realistic short-term weight loss goal for just about everyone. Plus, losing 3 pounds of body fat and toning your muscles just a little through proper exercise can have a big impact on the way you look and feel.

If you do it right, losing those initial 3 lbs can be your springboard to much bigger weight loss success. You'll learn what it takes to lose weight the right way. Plus, if you use the healthy fat-burning techniques below, you'll end up with a boosted metabolism (not to mention boosted self-confidence) and some vital momentum to fuel you on your way to a leaner, fitter body!

Sound good? Here we go...

5 Steps to Lose 3 Pounds Fast

1. "See" what you want. Every day spend some time mentally visualizing yourself losing weight, being confidant, and feeling fantastic. Have a clear image of what you want in mind at all times. Goal visualization is a very powerful "fast success" tool that everyone should use.

2. Boost your energy. Make sure you have the energy you need to lose pounds quickly by getting at least 7 hours of quality sleep per night, avoiding soda, sweets and other junk foods, and drinking about 60-70 ounces of pure water per day. Start off each day with a big glass of water and, if possible, a few minutes of light, refreshing exercise.

3. Cut out white carbs. Stop eating all highly-processed "white" carbs and you could easily lose 3 pounds in a couple of weeks... without doing anything else! The worst -- and most common -- white carb foods are white sugars and white flours (e.g. white bread, pasta, etc.). Other white foods you may want to avoid include white potatoes and white rice, as these are starches that are easily converted into sugar once you eat them.

4. Eat protein and plants. The "perfect" meal for fast fat loss is one based around a lean protein, raw or lightly cooked vegetables (especially the leafy green variety), a serving of beans or legumes (no sugar added of course) for appetite-killing carbs, and some good fats (e.g. from olive oil or avocado). No sugars, bad fats, bad starches, fried foods, or processed carbohydrates. Most, if not all, of your daily calories should come from lean proteins, oily fish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, raw fruit, and healthy fats. Limit, or at least cycle, your intake of starchy carbs (grains, rice, potatoes, etc.). You'll spike your metabolism and you'll be losing pounds every day!

5. Do short, effective workouts. Don't spend hours every week jogging on a treadmill. Instead, do a short, fun, and intense workout every other day or so. Combine weight training with HIIT -- high-intensity interval training cardio. Do full-body workouts and keep them to under 40 minutes in length. Exercising like this will help you lose those 3 pounds in a very short amount of time, while also toning your muscles in a way that will make it look like you've lost much more than just three lbs!

That's it. Follow the proven steps above and you'll lose 3 pounds fast. Possibly a whole lot more. Just focus on that simple, highly-attainable goal. The rest will soon follow!

Which one of those "whites" is not like the other? Three are highly processed foods, one is a whole food.

I'm so tired of the endless potato scare. They are not the same as processed flour and rice and are not bad for a diet in moderation.

CMS, you may have a point. But ask yourself this: will someone typically lose 3 pounds faster by eating starches like white potatoes... or by avoiding them for a week or two and instead focusing on more fibrous carbs from veggies, fruits, beans, legumes, etc.? I think the answer is obvious...

I've recently cut out all the super white carbs and switch to things like whole wheat pastas... I've also heard that cooking your pastas a little less (maybe called andante, where they are not super soft) is much better for you digestion because your body treats it different.

The three things that help me loose 3 pounds fast are:
1. Cut the sugar, completely
2. Eats lots of protein

The thing about potatoes and white rice is that they will spike your blood sugar the same as refined carbs do(just not as much). This is what leads to fat getting stored. Here is a little trick though. If you are going to eat those types of carbs eat them with a little fat. Choose a good fat of course such as olive or fish oil. It has been found that when eaten with fat those types of carb will no longer spike your blood sugar. It's best to cut them out all together but it's hard to stay motivated that way and losing fat permanently is a long process.

I've gotta make a mention about the effectiveness of HIIT.

I'm introducing HIIT to a female friend of mine who wants to get in shape. Did 2 sessions, and her friends are saying she's slimmer already. (she maintains a sensible diet too, nothing drastic)

I'd like to share my HIIT regime:

1 set consists of:

100m sprint
30m walking lunges
10 tuck jumps / squat jumps (like star jumps)
4x20m shuttle runs
20m broad jumps

Additional perks?

Toned quads, hams, calves and butt

:p

In my experience, another big mistake people make are that they need motivation. Everything has to be "fun." Let's face it...motivation is kind of a surface word. It is usually short lived and that's it.

The real deep stuff. The stuff that keeps us going is want. How much do you want it? Do you really want it or are you just wishing for it? If someone really wanted it (whatever it is)then motivation etc is not so important anymore.

Like was said in the post. Seeing/visualizing what you want is vital. It takes us away from the present results so we keep our minds on what we want instead of waiting for motivation to hit us. If there is any "motivation" at all it comes from having done the work, and seeing the results. There is nothing like that!

I would LOVE just too loose 3 pounds, but it seems to never happen. I'm 5'2 and 119-120 every day, even though I have a healthy diet - just as you described and I spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours every day doing weight training and cardio. I will admit, after 3 years of this regimen and no change, I'm getting tired of putting this much time into my workouts. Any ideas? My happy weight is 115. Any I know I'm not overweight by any means, my body fat is 19% (according to the calipher test at my gym), but those 5 pounds make a big difference to someone of my height. It takes me from average to really looking fit. Help!

A mistake is to spend too much time majoring in minor things. Potatoes in moderation (for me baked potatoes) are fine. It doesn't always have to be one way or the other.
Same with exercise. While shorter, more intense exercise sessions work wonders for changing your body composition, aerobic exercise is a key to long term "leanness". Why? because of the reprogramming effect on your body.
It's a long subject but true.

It's so refreshing to see others out there promoting a real "weight loss" way of eating. I'm so sick of these diets suggesting the restriction of vital
macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, & yes, FATS). We need all of these to maintain proper and balanced health. Eating the right foods, and managing to heavily restrict those processed grains, I have found to be #1 in health & fitness

If you want to lose weight, regardless of how much, you need to increase your metabolism. Here is what I have found to be most effective:

1. Total Body Resistance Training

2. High Intensity Interval Cardio

3. Good Nutrition Plan consisting of natural foods such as lean protein, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables.

The synergy of combining these 3 things consistently will supercharge your metabolism so you burn fat while you rest, work, sleep, blog, or do anything else. Try it and watch the pounds melt off quick!

As a personal trainer myself i think its all about small steps with a long term overall goal.

This article has some great tips. I think the most important thing is to set up realistic goals for yourself. If you fail to do so and are chasing after the impossible, you are ultimately setting yourself up for failure. If you want to lose 20 pounds for example, break it up into a "mini goal" of 2 pounds per week, which is very reasonable if you exercise and eat well.
As far as the dieting, try making "lifestyle changes" rather than going on any "fad diets". Make eating healthy part of your lifestyle and you will naturally start looking and feeling better. remember moderation and balance are key in any fitness plan.

Hi, was wondering if you heard about plastic water bottles deemed not safe to drink from in the long run? Aluminum bottles are a much safer alternative, even when it comes to sporting events and such. The $1+ bottles of water everyone buys from the stores is actually unhealthy to drink from because of a chemical which comes off the plastic and into the water in very small amounts. Check out my site and read about it, I want more people to know.

i also tell people great tips for motivation, since if they don't lose the weight they want fast most tend to give up and get back to where they started. Tips like quotes on the bathroom mirror to motivate you to hit the gym in the morning, or a picture of what you want to look like on the fridge so each time you grab for ice cream you will be reminded of your goals. Also just writing your goals down is soooo important.

There are a lot of good suggestions in the article, people who are unfamiliar with proper diet and exercise may feel overwhelmed and get off to a bad start. While I agree that white sugar contributes to weight gain, I would not write them off as unhealthy. Actually these starchy foods are a good source of fast energy. If you're planning an intense gym workout, it is a good idea to have a meal that consists of protein AND easily digestible carbs because they will readily be converted to fuel for your workouts. What I would recommend is a carb cut off, this means to LIMIT the consumption of white rice, pasta, etc. to the early part of the day because this is the time when you are likely to be most active and best able to use these foods as a fuel source. But don't misinterpret this to mean that you can eat as much of these foods as you want, they must be eaten in moderation according to the nutritional requirements of your age, gender and activity level. The more active you are, the more likely it is that you will burn these carbs quickly.

It is amazing isnt it!!!! I talk to people daily about this exact thing, and they just dont understand the importance of nutrition. Theres an excuse behind everything, especially obesity. Its always "Im fat because" or "I cant because" all of us live pretty intense lives as far as getting things done daily, and there is always time to take care of yourself no matter who you are, I also think its pretty easy to stay away from bad or unhealthy foods. Things that are considered fast digestion carbs are those that for the most part should be avoided, pizza, doughnuts, cookies and white bleached starches are of that category, these are things that should be avoided because they spike insulin levels and that promotes weight gain. There is a time and a plce for these types of things, post workout or on the ONE cheat day you allow yourself, but in small quantity. Just because its a cheat day doesnt mean you can devour an entire pizza. A cheat day is a helpful thing because it puts shock back into your body and changes its thinking, refreshing your workout for the following week. What i sometimes tell people is to try to quit one thing in there life that is considered unhealthy, whether its smoking or eating ice cream, or dont eat past 6 for a week, your body will go into shock and you will lose weight just doing that, never mind how much better you will feel. It is the time people start to realize the resource they have out there and take advantage of it. thanks for the artice.

You will definitely lose 3 pounds if you swap carbs for protein and veges, and some of it will be fat, but you should ensure people realise it's likely to be mostly water loss as glycogen stores decrease, not fat loss.

At 12:44 AM, Blogger theodore said...

@ healthy_blogging: Definitely right- it's not so much on the consumption of carbs and what have you but rather on the timing of consumption. Eating energy-rich food early on in the day will let the body burn-off the calories so they don't get absorbed as fat at the end of the day.

good post, there is a lot of great information in there, your nutrition tips are well done. there are certain times when some starches are necessary though. a post workout protein shake could go perfectly with a nice potato, although it is a fast digestion carb it does wonders for your muscles post workout, This type of carbohydrate enters the bloodstream much quicker and spikes insulin levels, replenishes muscles with glycogen, pushes amino acids into muscles, jump-starts muscle growth processes and destroys the release of cortisol which isthe catabolic hormone that increases muscle breakdown. this will not cause weight gain, because 20 to 40 minutes directly after the workout is the ONLY time fast digestion carbs are encouraged. Also potatoes have no fat and that is ideal for after your workout. Just keep the diet clean, stay to the outside of the supermarket, it works wonders, try it next time

This type of carbohydrate enters the bloodstream quickly and spikes insulin levels, replenishes muscles with glycogen, pushes amino acids into muscles, jump-starts muscle growth processes and kills the release of cortisol which is the catabolic hormone that increases muscle breakdown. Potatoes have a place just keep them to after the workout with 40 to 60 grams of protein. If your taking in carbs take them in early in the day. Each week drop your total carbs down to 100 grams or half of your normal amount, and up your protein cnout to about 2 or a little over grams per pound, you will get your calories that way and they will be extremely beneficial, as far as carbs for the rest of the day i would stick to vegetables, for endless nutrienst and vitamins from both the veggies and the protein. The protein will have endless life benefit anyway, plus give you hand fulls of amino acids. hope that helps

CMS - Potatoes are a full of Complex carbohydrates on the higher end of the GI scale avoiding them will help lose weight, eating in moderation is a great idea but on the other hand potatoes boiled baked or whatever are generally eating at dinner, and that would be the most ideal time to avoid all of those complex carbs.
Swwet potato is a better option but in general lower GI foods are a better way to go.

I have been working with a personal trainer and nutrtitionist via www.illuminategym.com and their meal plans from 'Healthy Meals' always seem to have some carbs in them in low amounts. I have currently lost over 25 LBS so the proof is in the pudding and I continue to eat carbs.

Great detailed post. The carb debate will continue to rage on. I honestly believe that anything in excess is bad for you. This is especially true with carbs.

That's a pretty good recipe. I also think having goals is a great idea. But I think one of those goals should be to have fun.

If you can have fun working out then you can do anything you want in terms of weight lost or inches lost.

But you are definitely right that starting out with goals that are more obtainable is much better to build momentum... I think going for over 5 pounds is better though!

I think the essence of what you say is spot on - sensible goals, sensible diet and moderate exercise. putting yourself in the right frame of mind is really important.

As a certified personal trainer, I love how you break weight loss down into small achievable goals – 3 lbs is fabulous, that’s exactly what I do with my weight loss clients, because they see the success and it really keeps them motivated!

I wanted to expand on your point number 5 High Intensity Interval Training – what I’ve done is take this one step further with what I call “Mini Circuits.” The theory is that a mini cardio workout takes less than 5 minutes to do – so whenever you have a couple of spare minutes throughout the day, you can burn some calories and get your heart rate up – 3 to 5 times per day is great! They are especially great for the holiday season – when we are all crunched for time! Check out this blog link for a Mini Circuit – all you need is a flight of stairs to start burning calories!

Great post! If you really want to loose weight it will take time, you can't loose weight in just a day. You need to have discipline. Exercising everyday without the right diet plan will have no result at all. So the key is to focus on what is your goal. This will help you motivate.

Great article, as a personal trainer for past 10 years, i know what your trying to say, but the article has few 'holes'.

your article sounds like its describing 'long term lose weight and keep it off' rather than 3lbs real fast.

and also, 3 lbs of weight? fat? if your talking about #s on a scale, i can get anyone to drop 7 lbs. in one day. but fat is much more harder.

hope your not offended, great site. keep it up

Personally I like using the elliptical in helping me lose weight. It's easy on the joints and never gets boring. I can workout on the elliptical for hours while watching TV and never get bored. I can feel myself sweating of the calories.

Very realistic post. This is what everyone should understand.Losing weight is not just the matter of hours, it takes time, discipline and dedication. One should not expect anything magical in tiring yourself out a few days and then become indisciplined again. One needs to be consistent.

I'm not into the whole lose weight quick schemes. When I read the title, I thought it was going to be one of those. But it's a good thing that most points are reasonable.

This year, I'm going to try to lose the pounds without compromising on my "live life" project. I'm not going to deprive myself. I'm going to jog everyday for 5 days a week (just for 30 minutes on my treadmill), while it's winter. But when it gets a little warmer, I'm going to hop on my old Schwinn (http://schwinnusa.com/allschwinn_3403201_B0021I150I_Schwinn-Coronado-Womens-Comfort-Bike-26-Inch-Wheels.html) and I'm going to re-discover my neighborhood.

Awesome post! Thanks for the insights. I found an awesome food that really helps you stay full longer- naturally, without a pill- and keeps you feeling good. It's called Rokit Fuel. See more about it at www.rokitfuel.com. I've never found anything quite like this. I don't shop at nutrition stores very often, but I do go there to pick up my RF. I ate some this morning and mixed some yogurt in with it. Or you can eat it cold with milk. It is especially yummy to add fresh fruit to the mix. It truely gives you the extra push you need to have energy during your workout. Go get em!

Excellent article. All great knowledge that many people need to know about.

As far as the comment left by cms...

Potatoes, depending on how they are prepared, can have a very high glycemic index, which makes them similar to white rice and processed flours. So the author of this post is correct.

REMEMBER to put up pictures of what you want to look like, it is the best way for me, that keeps me going that little bit longer when im working out, ill stay on the treadmill for an extra ten minutes, or do an extra sprint right at the end, also good idea to put pictures on the fridge, so everytime you feel like chocolate, you go to the fridge, see the picture and then quickly change your mind, hehehe.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle is convincing people that they DO have time to exercise.
After all, is it really that difficult to get up half an hour earlier in the morning or to turn the TV off once in a while?
Keep up the good work, PJ.

I used to be very fit and athlete, but with the passage of time I became lazy and developed a habit of eating and sleeping along with no exercise. Which deposited around 25 - 30 Kilo of fat into my stomach, face, legs and all over my body? Everyday when I looked in the mirror I had thought today I will start exercising, which was clearly a false promising to myself, again with the passage of time I realized now enough is enough I have to do something to get rid of this fat. So I stepped on to the thread mill and started running 40 Minutes everyday at 9 Miles per hour. Right after finishing a marathon every day I then take the free weight and start building my shoulders and biceps, chest and etc. 3 Days continues exercise and 2 days rest which continued over the period of 3 months and I have now lost 22 Kilo of fat and I have started to look young and energetic once again. I recommend everyone who is facing the same symptoms of fatness try to get fit, it is really easy and not difficult at all. Thank you

I love Hiit workouts, it's a great way to burn a butt load of calories quick. I read a report that says that 2 hours of intervals in two weeks is equal to 10 hours of steady state cardio... I choose 2 hours and 8 hours to add to my life!

Everyone wants to lose as much weight as possible in the least time. Instead I think a gradual weight loss is healthier, and the body will adapt better to it. It's more about being consistant rather than rushing things. If you are determined and well informed, you will be able to lose weight efficiently. Good diet, good sleep and regular physical activity!

Goal visualization is a very good point! I have my goal chart on my wall above my desk. My goal chart has my life goals, 5 year goals, and this year goals written on it. I also have magazine cut-outs and I'm looking to add a house and beautiful beach scene. Its an on going project. I put it in this spot because I tend to over eat at my desk or get lazy and stop studying/doing my work.

Great advice. This might be helpful too...

I was training a guy who had reached a plateau. He drank fairly regularly, so he tried cutting back for a couple of weeks and lost 5lbs right away.
