The best diet food?
Someone sent in an email recently asking this:
"What is the single-best diet food?"
Obviously, this is a pretty tough question that is open to debate. But it could also lead to an interesting discussion. So please let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.
Just to get things rolling, our nominee for the best diet food is whey protein powder!

The best diet food is water, obviously.
Lentils. They're high in fiber, folate, magnesium and iron. They also taste starchy and filling but are lower in calories and have protein to boot!
psyllium husks are my favorite diet food.
The way that I keep weight off is with fruit. Anytime I get hungry I eat an apple. simple but it works!
I second the nomination for water, but in the spirit of a 'food' choice, I think spinach is the best diet food. It's high in fiber, iron, vitamins, and low in calories. It's high-volume, so you can eat a lot for only a few calories, and it's flexible; you can make it into a lunch salad with some other veggies and lean protein, a soup with a little chicken broth for a snack or appetizer, an egg white omlete for breakfast, or any number of other options.
Put my vote in for water as well.
But beyond water, I have to say chicken. Not only is it a healthy protein, it's incredibly versatile.
You can't go wrong with grilled chicken.
I realize the interpretation of the phrase "diet food" influences answers.
In terms of an item providing macro and micro nutrients from healthy sources: I vote for trail mix with nuts and dried fruit.
"Diet food" made me think of something to eat at work rather than vending machine food or other quickie, high fat or useless snacks.
Water is essential to life and chicken is the best protein source outside whey powder, but I was thinking of something you can eat by itself.
Good luck munching on those lentils or husks (wow!) to get you through the afternoon at work.
The best diet food is food you would eat if you weren't on a diet. Unless you really love crunching on psyllium husks and lentils, stick with smaller amounts of food you really like. Otherwise, you will probably have trouble eating the foods for an extensive period of time. And when you stop, so will the weight loss.
