"What's the best appetite suppressant?" Many people ask me this question on a weekly basis. Some want to know about natural appetite suppressants, some are interested in finding out about herbal and even drug-based appetite suppressants. I tell them all the same thing: If you want to suppress your appetite in a healthy and safe way, stick with 2 proven solutions -- high-fiber foods and pure water. I had the pleasure of speaking with the renowned Dr. Batmanghelidj (Dr B. for short!), author of Your Body's Many Cries for Water and Water: For Health, For Healing, For Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty! and he really opened my eyes about not only the importance of adequate water consumption, but also as to the reasons WHY we must drink so much of it.

On his website, www.watercure.com, you can find many testimonials about people whose health conditions were virtually improved through the consumption of adequate water. Let’s start with the basics, what is "adequate" when it comes to how much we should consume?

Dr. B told me that you should drink one-half your body weight in fluid ounces of water, therefore for my 150-pound body, I should be consuming 75 ounces of water a day (jeez, and I thought 64 was plenty!). I asked him if there was such a thing as drinking too much water and he said certainly there is, but that would be three to four gallons of water a day and not many people could, or would want to, consume that much, but that you don’t want to drink so much that you feel lightheaded.

I asked him what to tell the person who says they "hate" water. He laughed and said, "Ask them if they hate themselves!" I was confused and asked why that would help. He replied that our bodies are made up of 75 percent water and our brains are 85 percent water, therefore if you hate water, you hate just about everything about yourself. He advises that someone take a look in the mirror, see who he or she is and realize that water nourishes and serves them and they must drink it, no matter what.

It is funny that we take for granted other things that we do just because they are good for us, such as brushing our teeth, bathing, paying taxes, etc., but too often when it comes to our weight we have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to do that which is good for us.

Dr. B. went on to explain (most of which was way over my head!) that water is the main source of energy for human function and that without water, food has NO value! Water increases the energy content of everything it breaks down (apparently food with no water in it doesn’t give us energy -- like Twinkies?!). And, there is also a way to tell if you are getting enough water or are dehydrated. If your urine is dark or orangish in color -- you are dehydrated. If it is lighter yellow you are slightly dehydrated and if it is almost clear -- you are hydrated and that is a good thing!

He believes that education about water will change a person’s mind and therefore get them to drink the amount their body requires. He stresses that he has no commercial gain from telling people to drink more water -- you can merely turn on your tap and drink from it! He said it is purely personal preference whether one drinks tap, bottled, mineral or designer water.

Best news about water? Consuming the correct amount can attribute to weight loss of up to four pounds a week (sadly, not every week, but some!).

And, about that appetite suppressant I promised to tell you about? You guessed it -- WATER! Dr. B recommends drinking two 8-ounce glasses of water 20-30 minutes before a meal. Wait for the water to settle and you will realize a much-decreased appetite! Talk about good news! He states that while water isn't really an appetite suppressant, it replaces the energy in the food we eat and is a much cleaner source of energy.

He explained it to my very unscientific mind this way: water is like hydro or clean fuel and food is like fossil fuel that leaves pollution in its path. More simply put, "Obesity is the pollution of relying on food for energy."

I have to admit that when I get strong cravings, one after the other...something sweet, something salty, etc. I find it is because I didn't drink any or enough water that day.

That sounds nice but doesn't work for me. When I eat salad, I usually get more hungry. Same goes for fruit. Could you specify which kind of fruit and vegetables are especially high in fibre?

i use to drink a tablespoon of lemon juice to suppress my appetite. it worked. but drinking plenty of work also helps and is not harsh on your stomach or teeth like lemon juice. lemon juice can also be used to bleach blotch or discolored skin and also, i use it to keep my skin clear, by rubbing a fresh slice of lemon after washing my face, letting it dry and rinse it off. my face felt so soft when it dried too.

diet pills are useless, do not use them! there are none that will give you the results you want. self control is also a big factor,

I would like to add a few things. I eat very healthy! For the most part I only eat organic, at home at least. I also read that if you stay to the outer edge of the store you will avoid processed foods and thus gain less. I have found this to be true. I am a naturally large person by genetics. My mother was very thin and my father was not. I landed in the middle.
I have basically been on a diet since 4th grade. I have tried everything! I even had a doctor prescribe me phen-fen when I was 17 and 130lbs. (crazy, but I didn’t know) I am now 158lbs and been through almost every diet you could think of. Before you stop reading know that since my mom passed in Sept. of 09 I have lost 30lbs. That puts me at 160’ish lbs.
My mother who was 5’9 and 125 always made me very aware of my 5’6 130ish frame as too large. She ate big Mac’s and whole milk, daily. If I ate anything delicious it landed right on my stomach and ass. (Not great for a dancer) Of coarse now I realize that weight would be too thin or super amazing to think I could look that way again!
I am writing to say that I have done it all! I have done, Phentermine, which is still the best to control appetite. I have tried hydroxycut, nytri system, hoodia, acaia berry, rip fuel, slim quick, slimfast, lipotrol, annorex, xenical, and alli. There are others that I have googled and they came up as highly recommended (so I tried them) and I ended up being sucked into some crazy program with hidden fees and paid hundreds for nothing but a bunch of success stories that were bogus!
I will say that Nutri System really did work. The only thing is that the food was only good for a week or so. (Very much like canned food so don’t do auto order, pick foods u like.) Also I did lose 25lbs in a month and a half with no exercise. Although everything started to taste the same very soon. Also when I lost enough weight they still made me pay to cancel the service. (Only $50 but still, it worked isn’t that enough?)
In the long run after all the pills, diet fads and regaining what I lost from nutria-system and such, I still needed to lose the weight. I started to eat this meal plan just cause I liked it.
Breakfast:
1 whole wheat English muffin w/ organic peanut butter and flax seeds (at stevia for xtra kick) or
Oatmeal with 1tsp brown sugar and handful of pecans or nuts of choice. (Pine nuts say to keep u full)
Lunch:
Tuna / low fat mayo, salt / pepper to taste/ celery sticks
Natural Peanut butter with natural Graham Crackers.
A handful of fruit with coffee or tea.
Dinner:
Soup, broth based of any kind.
Grilled chicken with fresh greens or whatever is in season with low butter.
Dessert: Jell-O, fruit, a piece of chocolate (usually my choice), wine, coffee drink.

I also cheat 1 day a week. I have lost 35 lbs without exercise! I still cannot believe it. I just thought I would share since I know so many of you have been down the same road! Feel free to ask me any questions. I’m no expert but I sure have tried it all! 9 me and my wallet are proof) I have pics too!
