Should You Avoid Aspartame?
Recent findings show that sugar-free 'diet' soft drinks can actually make you gain as much (or even more) weight as normal high-sugar soft drinks. When you add this new information to the scary stories surrounding the artificial sweetener aspartame, it becomes obvious that we should all probably avoid anything flavored with Nutrasweet, Equal, etc.
Here's a new post on the subject from one of the Web's best health blogs...
Dr. Mercola's Health Blog: Horrors of Aspartame Revealed in Documentary

What's really scary is the obesity epidemic hitting the world -- that's a real danger, unlike all these Internet-generated myths about a perfectly safe sweetener. Aspartame has been used by millions for nearly 25 years, has the approval of virtually every regulatory authority in the world, as well as the endorsement of major health/medical groups like American Dietetic Association and American Medical Association. And aspartame, when used as part of an overall healthful diet, can actually help people lose weight -- shown by published research studies. The benefits are real, the risks are not. p.s. Jamie, the study you cite about diet soft drinks was not on real people drinking Diet Coke -- it was on 12 rats! Each can of diet soda saves 150 calories, so put that in your daily calorie savings bank and what do you think will happen? Just think, when you drink regular soda it's like drinking 10 teaspoons of sugar in carbonated water.

Actually, I think 'normal' high-sugar soft drinks are just as bad as aspartame-flavored drinks. I've always recommended avoiding both...
Also, I agree with you that the obesity epidemic is one of the most serious health problems facing America and other parts the world right now. That's exactly why it's so important for people to realize that certain ingredients in 'diet' drinks may actually lead to more weight gain!
