Butter vs. Margarine Truth

Millions of people have received the "Butter vs. Margarine" email that began circulating about a year ago. If you haven't gotten it yet, here it is:

The difference between butter and margarine?

Both have the same amount of calories, butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods, butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

Now for Margarine, very high in trans fatty acids triple risk of Coronary Heart Disease, Increases total and LDL ( This is the bad Cholesterol), Lowers HDL cholesterol and this is the good one, Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold, lowers quality of breast milk, decreases immune response, and decreases insulin response.

And here is the most disturbing fact......

Margarine is but one molecule from being PLASTIC..... (This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated, this means hydrogen is added changing the molecular structure of the food.)

You can try this for yourself, purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area, within a couple of days you will note a couple of things, no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it, (that should tell you something) it does not rot, smell differently... Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it, even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow... Why?

Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
Obviously, this makes margarine seem pretty scary. Of course, many people know by now that it's not nearly as healthy as it once seemed -- but is it really that bad? Find out the truth behind the Butter vs. Margarine debate...

The same argument is valid for all sorts of stuff that makes people lots of money. They don't care what is is, if it tastes good and they get rich, they'll push it as hard as they can.

"... the love of money is a root of all evil." - the Bible.

How true in our society!

What a bunch of bunk! Margarine is made from hydrolyzing (adding water to) animal and vegetable fats, and sometimes even uses real butter as a major ingredient. To say it's "only a molecule away" from being "plastic" is pure storybook alchemy and anyone who was even slightly awake in organic chemistry class would know this. You can get into how much water is used and which vegetable oils are used in the various types and grades of margarine as to its "healthiness" in trans fats, total fats, saturated fats, etc, but the bottom line is they're both bad for you in excess. But it's still hard to beat butter for tasting like, well - butter.

Correction - in my previous comment I used the term "hydrolyzing" - Not the correct term - "hydrogenation" is correct. I did nod off a couple times in chemistry class!

Yeah and I am only one chromasome from being a Chimp, but that doesnt mean I r one. Although my wife says if I grow anymore hair on my back she is gonna have me tested at the genetics lab. I wonder if that is a side effect of the trans fatty acid? Somebody said something about acid damaging your chromasomes.....

This is hype. Hydrogen peroxide is just one molecule away from water (H2O2 vs H2O). Does that mean no water? I say this as a butter lover, but really dislike nonsense like this that ends up being circulated for years through email.
